Camp Beneath the Killer Mountain
Fairy Meadows — known locally as Joot — is one of the most spectacular camping destinations on Earth, a lush alpine meadow at approximately 3,300 metres on the northern flank of Nanga Parbat (8,126m), the ninth-highest mountain in the world. Located in the Diamer District of Gilgit-Baltistan, this natural platform offers an unobstructed panorama of Nanga Parbat's massive Rakhiot Face, a wall of ice and rock rising nearly 5,000 vertical metres above the valley floor. Camping here places you closer to an 8,000-metre peak than almost any other accessible campsite in the Himalayas.
The journey begins at Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway, where a legendary single-lane jeep track — widely considered one of the most thrilling mountain roads on Earth — climbs 12 kilometres to Tato Village at 2,600 metres. From Tato, a moderate 5-kilometre trek through dense pine and birch forests delivers you to the open meadows. The campsite itself is surrounded by wildflowers in summer, with the Milky Way arching directly overhead on clear nights and virtually zero light pollution for hundreds of kilometres.
Our camping tour provides full expedition-quality equipment and experienced mountain staff who prepare meals over open fire. Evenings are spent around roaring bonfires with views of Nanga Parbat silhouetted against a star-filled sky. An optional day hike to Beyal Camp (3,967m) offers even more dramatic views of the Rakhiot Glacier. This is camping at its most sublime — raw, wild, and utterly unforgettable.
