Three Valleys, One Ancient World
The Kalash people number approximately 4,000 individuals living in the three valleys of Bumburet, Rumbur, and Birir in the Hindu Kush mountains of Chitral District. They are the only remaining polytheistic indigenous people of South Asia, practitioners of a religion — called Kalash Desh or simply 'the Kalash way' — that venerates a pantheon of deities led by Dezao (the creator) and Mahandeo, and observes an annual cycle of festivals tied to the agricultural and pastoral calendar. Despite intense pressure to convert over the past century — the number of Kalash has fallen significantly from an earlier estimated population of 200,000 — a core community has maintained its identity with remarkable tenacity.
The non-festival cultural experience we offer allows deeper engagement than the crowded festival visits: you spend extended time in villages, visit the carved wooden Jestak Han temples (the sanctified women's houses that are central to Kalash ritual life), meet craftswomen making the elaborate headdresses (kupas) worn on ceremonial occasions, and accompany farming families through their daily routines of goat herding, walnut and mulberry harvesting, and wine-making. The Kalash produce wine — one of the very few communities in Pakistan to do so — from locally grown grapes and mulberries, a practice permitted within their non-Islamic religious framework.
Birir is generally considered the most traditional of the three valleys, with the highest proportion of Kalash residents relative to the Muslim population that has grown in all three valleys. Rumbur is the most remote and least-visited, offering the most intimate community experience. Bumburet is the most accessible and has the best guesthouses. Our tour visits all three, spending varying amounts of time based on the group's interests and the community's rhythms at the time of visit.
