The Greatest Mountain Motorcycle Road on Earth
The Karakoram Highway — KKH, N-35 in Pakistan's road numbering system — is consistently ranked among the world's greatest motorcycle roads. Stretching 1,300 km from Islamabad's Faizabad interchange to the Khunjerab Pass at 4,693 m on the Chinese border, the KKH took 20,000 Pakistani and 15,000 Chinese workers nearly 20 years to build, with an estimated 810 workers killed during construction. Completed in 1978, it follows the ancient Silk Road caravans through terrain that was accessible only by foot and pack animal for thousands of years. Riding it is not merely a motorcycle trip; it is a journey through the compressed geology and history of the Karakoram, Hindu Kush, and western Himalayan ranges.
The road reveals its character progressively. From Islamabad the first 200 km pass through the Margalla Hills and the Hazara plains before dropping into the dramatic Indus gorge at Besham — where the river has carved vertical walls 300 m deep through billion-year-old gneiss. North of Chilas (1,260 m) the famous Karakoram Confluence region approaches: at Jaglot, four of the world's eight-thousanders — Nanga Parbat, K2, Gasherbrum I, and Broad Peak — are theoretically visible from the road on a clear day, though their distances (40–160 km) require binoculars. The KKH's most celebrated stretch runs from Gilgit through Hunza: the Rakaposhi view (7,788 m), the turquoise Attabad Lake, the needle-sharp Passu Cones, and the final alpine climb to Khunjerab.
Our motorcycle expedition uses locally sourced bikes (Honda CG 125, Yamaha YBR 125, or client's own imported bike) with a support vehicle carrying luggage and spare parts. The route is staged into manageable daily distances of 80–150 km, allowing time at key viewpoints, cultural stops, and the inevitable roadside chai stops that are as much a part of the KKH experience as the mountain scenery itself.
