K2 Base Camp trek in the Karakoram

K2 Treks

Trek to the base of the world's second-highest peak through the legendary Baltoro Glacier

K2 (8,611 m) is the world's second-highest mountain and the defining landmark of the central Karakoram. Its near-perfect pyramid of rock and ice, rising above the confluence of the Godwin-Austen and Baltoro glaciers, is visible from dozens of kilometres away and draws trekkers and climbers from every continent. The approach from Skardu follows the Braldu River valley to Askole — the last village before the glaciers — and then continues up the Baltoro Glacier for five to seven days to Concordia (4,600 m), where K2's full south face is revealed in one of the most celebrated mountain panoramas in the world.

From Concordia, trekkers can continue to K2 Base Camp (5,100 m) beneath the Abruzzi Spur, or cross the technical Gondogoro La (5,585 m) pass for an alternative descent to Hushe. The full Concordia circuit, including Gondogoro La, typically takes 18–21 days and is rated as a strenuous non-technical trek requiring good physical fitness and solid acclimatisation. The months of July and August are the most popular, with stable weather and the best visibility for photography; late June and early September offer fewer trekkers on the route but a higher chance of unsettled weather. Permits, licensed guides, and registered high-altitude porters are legally required for the Baltoro corridor.
