Celebrate ancient traditions, vibrant music, and living culture in the mountains
Northern Pakistan is one of Asia's most culturally layered destinations, with more than fifteen distinct ethnic groups living in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral alone. Languages spoken in these valleys include Burushaski (a language isolate with no known relatives), Shina, Khowar, Wakhi, and Balti — each carrying its own oral literature and musical tradition. The Kalash people of Chitral maintain a pre-Islamic animist culture unique in South Asia, celebrating three major festivals each year: Chilam Joshi (spring, May), Uchal (summer, August), and Choimus (winter solstice, December), each marked by communal dancing, ceremonial dress, and ritual offerings.
The Shandur Polo Festival, held annually in July at 3,734 m above sea level, pits teams from Gilgit against Chitral in a free-flowing traditional form of polo played on the world's highest polo ground. Unlike modern polo, Shandur's game follows few formal rules, preserving the sport's Central Asian roots. Beyond Shandur, the Silk Route heritage festivals in Hunza and Ghizer celebrate the region's position as a crossroads of civilisations, with traditional music, crafts, and food from communities that once served the caravans moving between China, Persia, and the Indian subcontinent.
