About This Tour

The Shandur Pass road — connecting Gilgit to Chitral via the Ghizer Valley — is one of Pakistan's last truly remote motorcycle routes. Unlike the KKH, which carries significant truck traffic and is fully paved, the Shandur road transitions from sealed tarmac in the Ghizer Valley to rough gravel near the pass summit. This mix of surfaces, combined with the route's isolation (the nearest fuel stops are 100+ km apart in places), makes it a genuine adventure rather than a scenic drive. Yet the rewards are commensurate: the Ghizer Valley is one of Pakistan's most beautiful river valleys, the Shandur plateau is an otherworldly green expanse at 3,734 m, and the descent through Laspur toward Chitral passes through some of the most culturally untouched villages in the Hindu Kush.

The route's isolation is its greatest asset and its greatest challenge. Between Gupis and Chitral, there are no towns of any size, few mechanics, and limited mobile phone coverage. Riders must carry sufficient fuel (the support vehicle in our tour handles this), basic tools, and the mental flexibility to deal with a road that may require pushing bikes through stream crossings or around rockfalls. In return, you are almost certain to have stretches of road entirely to yourself — a genuinely rare experience in 21st-century adventure motorcycling.

Our Shandur motorcycle tour is run in the Gilgit-to-Chitral direction, with the support vehicle carrying luggage and fuel. Overnights in Phander and Laspur place you in small family guesthouses that are the most authentic accommodation available on this route, offering meals of fresh trout from the Ghizer River and locally grown vegetables. The Shandur plateau itself is a highlight for camp: with clear skies and minimal light pollution, the night sky from 3,734 m is one of the finest in Asia.
