About This Tour
Deosai National Park is one of the highest plateaus in the world, sitting at an average elevation of 4,114 meters in Gilgit-Baltistan, between Skardu and the Astore Valley. Known locally as the "Land of Giants" (Deosai translates roughly to "Land of Giants" in the local language), this vast, treeless expanse stretches across approximately 3,000 square kilometers of rolling alpine tundra, making it one of the most surreal and otherworldly landscapes in all of South Asia.
Deosai's primary claim to fame is as the last refuge of the Himalayan brown bear, a subspecies that was on the brink of extinction in the 1990s with fewer than 20 individuals. Thanks to the establishment of the national park in 1993, the bear population has recovered to over 70 animals. The plateau is also home to golden marmots, Himalayan ibex, red foxes, snow leopards, and over 124 species of birds including the golden eagle and lammergeier. During July and August, the plateau transforms into a spectacular carpet of wildflowers.
Sheosar Lake, at 4,142 meters, is the crown jewel of Deosai — a stunningly clear high-altitude lake that reflects the surrounding peaks and vast sky in mirror-like perfection. The lake is accessible by 4x4 vehicle from Skardu (the road is only open from late June to early October). Camping on the Deosai plateau under a canopy of stars, with no light pollution for hundreds of kilometers, is an experience that few places on Earth can match.
